Breast Imaging
Dr. Richard Reitherman has worked as a Hill Medical Corporation physician for many years serving as a breast imaging radiologist in Fountain Valley, CA at Orange Coast Memorial Breast Center and national recognized leader in the women’s imaging industry. He has been a vital part of the Orange Coast breast center team, serving as their Breast Imaging Medical Director. He has also served as the Pacific Breast MRI Medical Director in Laguna Hills, CA. His passion and dedication to the early detection of breast cancer and technological growth of the breast imaging industry are apparent in his countless presentations, published papers and clinical research.
At the national level, Dr. Reitherman has been active in promoting the best standards for breast care, and is well known for his clinical role in the early adaptation, promotion and refinement of Breast MRI with more than 20 years’ experience in breast imaging and intervention. He has published many peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, written over 20 editorials, and presented at over 40 conferences nationally and internationally (Germany, Turkey, Nigeria, Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Egypt. In addition, he was a member the First American Society of Breast Diseases Breast MRI Consensus Committee that was held in 2004 which contributed support to acceptance of Lifetime risk guidelines for Screening Breast MRI adopted by The American Cancer Society in 2007. Additionally, he serves as Imaging Editor for the SIS: Senologic International Society.
His clinical and research interests include improving screening for high-risk women under 40 years of age, the implementation of advanced NextGen panel testing to identify women that carry highly penetrant genetic mutations, implementation of standardized work-flow algorithms for breast cancer screening based on individual Risk profiling and latest technological advances (Ultrafast Breast MRI, and AI based risk evaluation of mammograms.
He has collaborated with Dr, Nancy Capello founder of AREYOUDENSE and provided expert testimony and consultation in several states dealing with the Patient Dense Breast Notification Laws and has been successful in their operational implementation in California breast centers.
He is focused on the strategic and tactical implementation of standardized workflow algorithms for breast cancer screening based on individual risk profiling including genetic assessment and the effective use of Dense Breast Mitigating Technologies / modalities particularly MRI in women under the age of 40 and those with dense breasts.
Dr. Reitherman earned both his medical degree and doctorate in neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA. He then completed his internship in internal medicine as well as his residency in diagnostic radiology at L.A. County USC Medical Center.
